Stefan is severely autistic. Furthermore, he has hyper-sensitive hearing, an auditory processing disorder, and sleep problems.
Put together, it means he can only communicate using signs and symbols, and gets frustrated quickly and easily. His mum, Juliet, now cares for him on a full-time basis.
A breakthrough though was made in 2006. A 1-week visit to a dolphin therapy centre in Florida transformed his development, and greatly improved his behaviour.
The centre recommended a further stay to enhance Stefan’s education. In order to make lasting changes to both his development, and to his behaviour, it was suggested he should stay for a fortnight this time, and that the visit should be made before he got too far into his teenage years.
However, the cost of the trip was simply too much for Stefan’s family to contemplate alone. Stepfather Malcolm, who works for the Ministry of Defence, approached the Fund for help.
Together with a number of other organisations, and in tandem with the family’s own fundraising efforts, the Fund made a grant to help towards the cost of the trip.
The visit took place in the summer. The effects have been dramatic. Stefan’s family have kindly given us permission to show a video, highlighting how valuable the therapy has been.
Juliet and Malcolm write, “Since the trip Stefan has changed in many ways.
“His confidence and spirit of adventure have improved tremendously and he is far more willing to follow instructions and try new things.
“As parents we have learned a lot about Stefan’s conditions by hearing another perspective and we understand a lot more of his problems and how to help him.
“Once again we want to thank everyone who has helped us from the bottom of our hearts.”
Stefan adds, “Thank you for helping me with my trip to America. I loved swimming with the dolphins. It made me very happy.”
